Think of balance as a verb. It is something you are doing in motion. In skiing, it is specifically realizing that you are on a surface that seems to be moving and changing rapidly, and you must move and adjust with it, or it will leave you behind.
The changes in pitch, snow consistency, and angles to the surface, all create challenges that are felt as speed and pressure changes of varying degree. The joints and muscles are perfectly designed to adjust to these changes if you are willing to allow them to function smoothly and efficiently.
Staying loose and fluid in the joints—especially the ankles, knees, hips, waist, neck, shoulders, and elbows (did I miss any?)—allows you to make the tiny adjustments that are consistent with balancing.
