What it is!
What is the Sports Diamond™?
(This is a reprint of a blog from Dec. 15. I had to delete that because the nasty guys found it!)
Everything you do on skis involves decision-making. The Sports Diamond™ helps you make better decisions. When you make and execute better decisions, you ski better. When you ski better you have more fun. (Life is so simple!)
The Sports Diamond™ is a model, methodology, language, and system for improving the ability to access four critical resources or gateways in sports development and performance. It creates a deep and lasting personal understanding of how any athlete can sustain and enhance the capacity for brilliant skiing—EVERY DAY—even when NOT at breakthrough levels.
The Sports Diamond™ is an organizing principle and strategy proposing that an athlete needs to develop dynamic balance among four global sports resources: Power (technical), Purpose (tactical/strategic), Touch (sensory), and Will (action).
Any athlete who can hold the balance, over time, among these resources can achieve the following benefits:
- learn to collaborate better with a coach,
- to self-coach better,
- to enhance performance in other sports,
- and to create brilliant days, every day—even when not at peak performance. (The learning is the breakthrough!)
Any athlete who consistently emphasizes one resource to a fault, at the expense of others, will ultimately become stuck--leading to boredom, poor performance, frustration, reduction of learning, and abandonment of the activity.
The Sports Diamond™ works, both short- and long-term, because:
- Any athlete can learn to approach any sport with full engagement in both process and results.
- It teaches athletes how to avoid becoming stuck and fragmented in their growth within their sport.
- It provides a clear yet flexible roadmap for practice, decision-making, development, and strategy.
- It is grounded in sports psychology, learning theory, kinesiology, race coaching, and 45 years of practical ski instruction research. Therefore individuals quickly recognize themselves and their experiences within it. This in turn, provides them with an easy grasp and application of its basic premises in all sports.
