Snowboard Design - Rocker and Camber

Snowboard manufacturers have embarked on a revolution of sorts in the past 3 years with the introduction of a variety of new designs, in particular in the area of camber and rocker. When viewed from the side, a snowboard with camber has a convex shape. A snowboard with rocker is convex. Camber is the shape of a smile, while rocker is the shape of a frown.

It was the standard for may years that boards were shaped with camber, now rocker and combinations of rocker and camber are common. There are also boards without rocker or camber that are totally flat.

The debate about the pros and cons of rocker and camber and rocker/camber combos is just getting started for many. One thing for sure about rocker boards is that riding deep powder is much easier.

I was riding with some teenagers recently and two of them are of very similar skill level. One was riding a traditional cambered board and the other was on a rocker board. We searched for some untracked snow and found it - deep and hollow powder. Given the simliarity of these kids it was a stark comparison of the two competing designs..... and the rocker board wins hands down for ease of use in deep powder.

“Camber is the shape of a smile, while rocker is the shape of a frown.” Isn’t it the other way around?
