A New Approach for Ski/Ride School Management

After forty years in ski schools, as both a manager and an instructor, I have witnessed the painful struggles that schools endure as they become stuck in the middle of certain types of problems that never seem to go away. I have seen considerable stress and divisions arise from those insisting on stability versus others calling for change. People would argue over employee needs versus customer needs, quality versus efficiency, increasing revenue versus cutting expenses, teamwork versus individual initiative, etc..

I and my colleague, Ahmed Yehia, have developed a methodology and strategy to help you break free from this endless cycle of frustration with dilemmas such as the ones mentioned above.

We work with two distinct, but coordinated, models or strategies—one around sports (performance and teaching), and the other around leadership. Both models are strengthened and anchored by the use of powerful methodology and language that enable your leaders to quickly and confidently get unstuck, with astounding organizational results.

We've worked with the Ski & Snowboard Schools of Aspen, The Snowbird Mountain School, The Steamboat Ski & Snowboard School, The Breckenridge Ski & Ride School, and the Copper Mountain Ski & Ride School. We've also worked with the prestigious Ski Teams of the Professional Ski Instructors of America.

Here are some of the comments we've received from these schools.

"I've been to two trainings with Weems and the diamond approach. Weems inspires people to look at the issues from multiple angles and then define the most appropriate action. The diamond approach gave me a set of skills that I use daily to effectively and efficiently lead people in a fair and balanced manner."

— Nelson Wingard, Director, Steamboat Ski & Snowboard School, PSIA National Alpine Team

"The Leadership Diamond has made a positive difference in how I approach sensitive management situations, interviews, and the feedback cycle. It helps keep me centered, objective and fair to the person and the process.

The Sports Diamond has had an affect on how I approach clinics. It has given me the tools to create a great clinic for the participants, as well as save one that may be going the wrong direction."

— Katie Fry, Managing Director Ski & Snowboard Schools of Aspen/Snowmass

"The Leadership and Sports Diamonds provide frameworks for balance. Teaching to manage and guide, rather than to overcome, is a powerful tool that not only serves a business well, but helps in all areas of life."

— Rich Burkley, General Manager of Mountain Operations for the Aspen Skiing Company, Former Managing Director, Ski & Snowboard Schools of Aspen/Snowmass
